Munson approaches the task in a way that is refreshing, by synthesizing historical facts and anthropological. This book is a good (and cheap) read for anyone who wants to learn more about the Middle East but isn't very knowledgeable about the subject.
The first several chapters in particular provide a brief introduction to the basics of Islam.
